Bio

Matt Berson was elevated to Assistant Commisioner in July 2023 after serving five years as the conference's Director of Communications. He oversees strategic communications, brand management, website maintenance, social media and partnerships for the WWPA.

Berson served as Sports Information Director and Assistant Director of Athletics, Communications for Cal State San Marcos, an NCAA Division II university in San Marcos, Calif. between 2012-16. During his time at CSUSM, Berson oversaw the communications strategy for the school’s transition from NAIA to NCAA DII, designed and implemented operations protocol for the in-venue entertainment video system for a new $11.4 million on-campus arena, led the complete redesign of CSUSMCougars.com, implemented live-streaming service of all CSUSM home athletic events, and managed digital strategy, web maintenance, publications and media relations.

Prior to his appointment at CSUSM, Berson served as a Sports Information Assistant at nearby NCAA Division II institution UC San Diego from 2010-2012, where he was the primary media contact for men's and women's soccer, men's and women's water polo and the 2011 national champion softball team.

Berson started his collegiate athletics career at UC Santa Barbara as Media Communications Assistant and Video Communications Coordinator in 2009-10. In addition to serving as the primary contact for men's volleyball, he headed the Gaucho video communications department by overseeing live video streaming of men's and women's basketball, baseball and women's volleyball contests. Berson also established UCSB Athletics' YouTube page and posted video to ucsbgauchos.com by filming, editing, publishing, and publicizing post-game interviews, features on student athletes, promotional videos, and commercials highlighting upcoming UCSB events.

Berson has also dabbled in the coaching ranks, serving as head coach for two different men’s club soccer programs at UC San Diego and Cal State San Marcos and compiling a 17-2-2 (.857) overall record in West Coast Soccer Association (WCSA) play. From 2011-2013, Berson helped the UCSD men’s program to two league titles, an Open Division 2011 National Championship, and guided the Tritons to promotion to the WCSA Premier Division. In 2015, Berson helped CSUSM to an undefeated regular season, a WCSA South Division championship and promotion to the WCSA Premier Division.

In 2021, he served as a volunteer assistant coach for the men's soccer programs at Holy Names University and Merritt College in 2021.

A native of Ventura, Calif., Berson received a Bachelor's in Sociology from UC Santa Barbara in 2009 and earned a minor in Sports Management with an emphasis in Athletic Coaching. He played four years for the UCSB men's club soccer team and served as captain of the 2007 national championship squad.  

He resides in North County San Diego with his wife, Breea, and daughter, Skylar.
